Opening FrontPage
|
Go to the Start menu and find FrontPage in the 'All Programs' list, and open
it up.
You will see the editor with a blank page called new_page_1.htm. Close this
page by clicking on the close box, in the upper-right corner.

Creating a new Web and linking pages
|
Go to File/New/Web
Select personal web (which will give you a ready formatted
web site which you add information to) or empty or one page (both of these
options allow you a bit more flexibility in your design), and specify where to
save it to. We'll choose the empty option this week. (Have a look at the
different types though before selecting to be aware of the types of webs
available.)
Go to File/New/Page. You will now have a new blank page
appear. Choose save as from file menu, and name it index, (this is the
conventional name for your home page.) It should now appear in the folder list
view. Right-click on it, go to properties and change it's name to index.
Make another page called favourites by going to the
File/Save As option and name it favourites. Again remembering to right click on
the page in folder list view and rename it. (You can also create a template page
for your site, by choosing FrontPage templates when you 'Save As'. We won't,
because at this stage we have no structure to our pages, and just want to
investigate some page features.)
Repeat this later for additional pages.
Go to navigation view, right click and drag favourites to
below home (which you may have to right-click and rename )
Give a title to each page. ie Home and Favourites
Now we need to link the pages. This can be done a few
different ways:
 |
First makes use of the Hyperlink button on the toolbar.
This operates in exactly the same way as it does in Word. ie On your home
page (index.htm) write the word 'favourites', then highlight it by
left-clicking and dragging over the text. Now click on the Hyperlink
button in the toolbar. In the window that appears click on the icon for
your favourites page. Then click OK. (Then 'save' this page.) This means
that, when using the preview panel, or ctrl-clicking on the word, which
now appears underlined as a hypertext link, while on the normal panel,
will take you to your favourites page. If you then type the word 'home' on
your favourites page and linking it by the same method, then both your
pages will be linked. (You don't have to use text, you could insert a
picture and then hyperlink it.) This is not the usual way in which you'd
link pages within your web, it's normally use to link to other pages on
the internet by specifying the URL that you want to link to. |
 |
Secondly, we can use hover buttons. Go to
Insert/Component/Hover Button. and a button will appear on your page, and
a dialogue box. Type in the button text that you want ie home or
favourites. Then the name of the page you want to link to, ie
favourites.htm or index.htm, then OK. Then save. If you run your cursor
over these buttons, while in the preview page, you will notice various
dynamic effects on the button. You can alter these effects and colours by
right-clicking the button, while viewing the normal page, and then
selecting Hover Button Properties. This looks a bit better than the above
method but is again, more often used to hyperlink to other web sites on
the internet. |
 |
Finally we can use Shared Borders and Navigation
Bars. Before we do this we should select a theme for our web. Go to
Format/Theme and make a selection (it's not too important at this stage
which one you select as it is easily changed later.) While in the Normal page view go to Format/Shared Borders and select
it. Click on the 'All pages' radio button at the top of the dialogue box
that appears. Then select the checkbox 'Top' and 'Include Navigation Bar'.
Now at the top of the page should appear navigation buttons for home and
favourites. Save your page, and in preview page view, check that the links
work. (You can also insert a navigation bar via Insert/Navigation Bar, but
this will only appear on the page that you are working on. However by
using a shared border your Navigation Bar will appear on all pages on your
web.) |
